Every mom I know (including myself) is busy making summer plans for our kids. These days, scheduling their summer is almost a full-time job. Thankfully, there is no shortage of camps and activities to choose from in Houston. My kids are finishing up 3rd grade and kindergarten, and both have become really interested in science and learning about the environment this year. Their elementary school has a garden and one of the highlights of their year has been planting and tending to the plants and flowers. I want to continue to foster this interest with some hands-on learning for them this summer. That is why I am thrilled with the opportunity to register them for BotaniCamp at Houston Botanic Garden.
What is BotaniCamp?
BotaniCamp is Houston Botanic Garden’s plant-centric nature camp for K-5 students. The sensory and inquiry-driven curriculum presents many opportunities to go beyond just observation as campers plant, grow, and interact with the Garden’s natural ecosystems. BotaniCamp’s themed weeks help campers connect with plants through thoughtful and diverse lessons and hands-on activities.
Check out what this mom had to say about BotaniCamp:
BotaniCamp was a great experience for my child. It is a wonderful camp full of programming designed to help your child grow and learn. As a parent, there is nothing better than knowing your child is getting to safely explore nature, building skills to become a lifelong learner, and discovering themselves and the world around them in fun, engaging and developmentally-appropriate ways. I would highly recommend!
BotaniCamp Theme Weeks
Houston Botanic Garden will host BotaniCamp for 10 weeks during the summer, and parents can sign their kids up for as few or many of these weeks as they wish. Every week of camp has a theme, including:
- Bug & Birds
- Ecosystem Adventure
- Arbor-Mania
- Flower Power
- Farms & Fields
My kids have been busy discussing which theme weeks they want to attend- it’s a tough decision, as they all look like so much fun!
Register for BotaniCamp
This summer, BotaniCamp runs Monday-Friday from 9 am- 2 pm, for $225/child. Parents also have the option to register their kids for a Gardening & Nature mini-camp, which is available from 2pm-5pm for $115/week/child. This is an excellent option for working parents, or for kids who just can’t get enough of camp!
Registration is easy! Just head to Houston Botanic Garden’s BotaniCamp website, choose which theme week you prefer, and click to register.
Note: Garden members receive discounts on both BotaniCamp and Gardening & Nature mini camp registrations.
Our lives are so busy during the school year, and we often overlook the importance of letting our kids experience and interact with nature. Summer is the perfect time for all of us, including our kids, to slow down and spend time outdoors. Houston Botanic Garden is one of the most beautiful spots in Houston to visit, and I am thrilled to give my kids the chance to attend BotaniCamp there while they are out of school for the summer!
