Connecting with our Kids through Meaningful Conversations

We love partnering with businesses like Bright Littles that empower us moms with great parenting tools!

The last few years have been tumultuous for a variety of reasons. From racial and social injustice, political division, and a global pandemic, there’s been a lot going on. I know I’m not the only one who’s struggled with how to talk to my kids about it all. It’s hard to talk about these things with our sweet innocent little ones- to not only explain it all in a way they will understand, but to, in some ways, acknowledge that the world isn’t the safe bubble we’d like it to always be for them.

This year, one of my New Year’s resolutions is to be more intentional about initiating those deep conversations with my kids. But it can be intimidating! What if I don’t know what to say? Or what if I say the wrong thing? Thankfully, I recently discovered Bright Littles to empower me in my endeavors. Their beautiful Convo Cards and Conversation Journals make it easier to spark thoughtful conversations with our kids! Through questions, activities, games, and thoughtful tips for caregivers, the Bright Littles products are an exciting and playful way to prepare our kids for the big world we live in.

Pick a Card, Any Card

The Bright Littles Convo Cards are an incredible and simple tool to start meaningful discussions with your kids. There are 125 colorful question and activity cards for ages 4 and up that address the 5 topics of diversity, health, safety, nature, and self. Each card is designed to start an ongoing conversation that will encourage confidence, kindness, compassion, and more! Use the cards around the dinner table or even throw them in the car. Some of my favorite conversations have happened with my kids when we’re in the car. From road trips to the daily school commute, these cards can be kept handy for quick and meaningful chats on the go.

Here are a few examples of the questions you’ll find on the Convo Cards:

  • Nature: How can you reduce food waste?
  • Self: Do you think we should be free to love who we want?
  • Diversity: How many religions can you name?
  • Health: Are you or anyone in your family allergic to anything?
  • Safety: If someone you don’t know tries to get you to come with them, what do you do?

Dive Deeper

Bright Littles also has Conversation Journals available that cover the topics of mental health, leadership, and safety. While it can be nerve wracking bringing up big topics with your kids, these interactive journals help you every step of the way. The “hey, grown-up” tips throughout will help point you in the right direction with ways to share, examples and more! The journals connect with kids through social emotional games, creativity, fun activities, and more.

Our kids are ready to start learning and growing at a young age, and they are experiencing things on the playground, classroom and beyond that we as parents can’t control. They catch bits and pieces of our grown up conversations and overhear things on the radio or the news. They need a safe way to process what they’re hearing and I always want my kids to know they can come to me. By talking to them about hard things like bullying, their bodies, safety, feelings, and more, we are empowering and inspiring them to grow and connect with themselves and the world in a healthy way!

For moms, by a mom

Bright Littles was founded by Tara Miko, as a love note to her own daughter, when she could not find age-appropriate conversation tools to help prepare her for the world. She worked with a phD in Education and a Learning Scientist to develop interactive and engaging tools that help kids and families navigate big topics together. Bright Littles Conversation Cards and Journals are an award winning and kid approved way to prepare your Bright Littles to face the world with kindness and wonder!

These products have been researched and validated by first responders, child therapists, leaders in the community, parents, and of course, kids. Enabling interactive learning is core to all that Bright Littles does.

What an amazing privilege it is as a parent to forge real connection through real conversations with my kids. And it’s exciting to think that we can be a part of bringing up a kinder and more thoughtful generation! With the start of a New Year upon us, now is the time to start engaging in those difficult but meaningful conversations with our kids. Let Bright Littles set you up for success!

Bethany Dufilho
Bethany, the daughter of an army chaplain and a special education teacher, grew up moving every 2-3 years. She considers herself an introvert who had to learn how to make friends quickly! She met her Houstonian husband, Paul, in college and they married in 2004. They first settled just north of Houston, where she earned her master's degree at Sam Houston State in School Psychology. After working in public education for a couple of years, she decided to stay home full time with their children, Charlie {2008}, Norah {2010}, and Will {2013}. The family moved to Katy in 2012, where they’ve been ever since. She loves decorating and even had her own small business for a while. She also loves to read, binge-watch old TV shows, talk politics and enneagram, and will not turn down a cup of strong coffee or a good conversation with a friend.
