This inspiring event celebrates African American Literature and authors while bringing our community together through the joy of reading. Established in 1990 by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers (NCTE), the Read-In has connected more than 6 million participants worldwide and is a highlight of Black History Month. We invite to celebrate the culture and experience the rich voices, stories and traditions of African American authors.
Rice University’s Black History Month Series

Rice University will celebrate Black History Month with a series of more than 30 events, starting January 31st and lasting until March 8th. Themed African Americans and Labor, this month’s programming includes a series of discussions, film showings, fellowship opportunities and special festivities highlighting the richness of Black culture. The events also provide individuals outside the African American community a glimpse into the daily lives of Black Americans to appreciate the broader spectrum of contributions and experiences.

Visit the African-American Library at the Gregory School
A visit with the kids to The African American Library at the Gregory School is definitely in order during African American History Month, as the Gregory School was the first public school for African Americans in Houston. The Library is one of the few African American libraries in the country and contains a vast array of information surrounding the African American culture. It also features both special and permanent exhibits that expose visitors to African American heritage in a unique way.
