This environmental science facility is a must for lovers of the outdoors, animals and nature in general. The indoor facility includes a variety of live native animals, a nature-themed touch table, and interactive learning areas.

My kids have also participated in their homeschool classes and summer camps, both great hands-on learning opportunities for students of all ages. They include learning games, crafts, birdwatching and nature hikes on the outdoor 2 mile trails.

There is also an educational walk-up pond right outside the learning building, with informative signage; plus a bird nesting island, garden area, and binocular stations located throughout the nature trails. It’s a nature escape right in the heart of the city and a free local attraction! Make the drive to Pearland for this learning and relaxing escape.

Operating Hours: Thursday and Friday 10 am-2 pm and Saturday 10 am-4 pm

While you could drive into Houston for the traditional zoo experience, a zoo of a different kind is located just 6 miles from I-45 or 3 miles from the Hwy 35 loop. The open air Bayou Wildlife Zoo, located in Alvin, provides opportunities to engage with animals in various ways.

The open-air tram tour drives through the enclosed property and visitors are able to hand-feed zebras, llamas, ostriches, deer, and other animals. This up-close tour is an opportunity to connect with the animals in a more intimate way.

Addie Lou’s Barnyard has a full range of animals from typical farm animals to exotic and rare breeds.

Outside picnic food is welcome; there is an outdoor seating area and yard games for further enjoyment and relaxation.

Froberg’s Farm

Address: 3601 West Hwy 6, Alvin 77511
Operating Hours: The store and bakery are open daily from 8 am- 6 pm; check social media for daily updates regarding strawberry picking

Another local gem in the Alvin area is Froberg’s Farm. This local small business includes a bakery, home to their famous fried pies of all fruit flavors, and a produce market with the best local produce crops based on what is grown locally each month. In addition, there is  Greak’s Smokehouse, a Christmas tree farm, and other local family favorites including a corn maze and fall festival held end of September through November.

But the best reason to go to Froberg’s Farm is their strawberry picking. You can purchase their bucket for $1.50 or bring your own container; strawberries are priced at $3.25 per pound and are the best berries around. The hands-on experience with your kids and the berry picking photo ops make this a family outing to remember.

The Pearland GeoTour

Love scavenger hunts and still looking for a social distancing outing with the family? Consider geocaching as your new favorite hobby! To get started, simply download the Geocaching app to your smartphone and search for Pearland GeoTour. Your mission with the geocaching adventure is to locate 30 hidden boxes (AKA geocaches) throughout the City of Pearland. Once you find a geocache, you can share stories with others, leave a small trinket in the cache container, or leave your entry on the log that includes your name and date of discovery. Each container and each location is unique, using the app can get you within feet then it’s up to your own search combined with any hints available on the app to help you find the hidden geocache treasures.

This 6-screen movie theatre shows the latest film features, all in a renovated venue space with motorized reclining seats, small tray tables, and a self-serve popcorn, soda and ICEE station.

As you can see, plenty of fun to be had in Pearland and Alvin, just a short 30 minute drive from Houston. Consider these smaller communities for your weekend outings, and support their small businesses! You will be so glad you tried some new adventures with your loved ones.
