Gift Ideas for Teacher Appreciation Week

Teacher Appreciation week is May 5-May 9, 2025

girl standing with teacherWe all can agree that teachers deserve more than a week of appreciation – the praise should be ongoing! Through staff shortages, testing requirements, lesson planning – these amazing leaders do it all. As a former teacher and now administrator, I see it all every day. The pressure. The effort. The long work days. And, not to mention all the changes that occur yearly and for some, daily.

Through my years as a an educator, the gifts have been plenty, and the love was felt. I love my coffee mugs and cute cups for the much-needed hydration, but there are more things that our overworked teachers desire. As we prepare for Teacher Appreciation Week, we want to share some gift ideas for the loved teacher(s) in your kids’ lives.

Wish Lists

Check if your school has teacher wish lists. My daughter’s school always shares a link to her teachers’ favorite things. We love to give them exactly what they want – so gifts to Target, Starbucks, and Amazon are always a hit. Maybe they have a favorite nail salon or restaurant – you can make a gift basket of all those goodies! You can also inquire about Amazon Wish Lists to see what is needed for the classroom. Teachers pay for their creative rooms themselves, so it’s a great idea to help them brighten up their space.

Notes of Gratitude

I began teaching 25 years ago, and I still have bundles of thank you cards from my students. Every now and then, when I need a pick-me-up, I read a few. Such precious memories of my precious “kids.” These words of gratitude go a long way – parents can get into it as well. Send your kids’ teachers a note from YOU. Trust me, it’s an honor to know their efforts are being recognized outside of the classroom.

Food! Food! Food!

Nothing makes a teacher’s day better than not packing a lunch. You can help organize luncheons and serve the staff as well as decorate with a theme. Or, you can go back to their wish lists to find out their favorite lunch treat. Surprise them one day with lunch or let them know it’s coming. I can tell you spring is crazy with testing and all the things – so bring them some food before the school year ends.

Teachers, what did you wish for each year? You are the experts, and we want to make sure you are spoiled during Teacher Appreciation Week and throughout the year as well.

Thank you, Houston Teachers!
