Hot Tips for Healthy Summer Hair

Are you ready for the heat? Is your hair? Summer’s hot hot weather can have us tossing our hair in a bun and forgetting about it. While all that vitamin D can be good for the soul, it can damage our hair! Let’s skip the summertime damage and give our hair the protection and treatment it deserves. Below are some great tips and tricks that will help keep your strands smooth all summer long.

First things first, call your stylist! Ditch the split ends and start summer off with a fresh look. You will look and feel good, and your products will work better for you when your ends are not fried to the point of no return.

Moisturize and Hydrate

Are we sick of hearing to drink water yet? Well one more time, DRINK UP LADIES! Water is important for our skin, nails, brain, and hair! Without water, our bodies would be unable to bring nutrients to the hair and scalp. Aim to drink about 8 glasses of water per day. Eating a balanced diet and all the right vitamins can also help support healthy hair and hair growth.

Don’t Overwash

While it might good to wash your hair every time you get a little sweaty this summer, keeping washing schedules to a minimum has been shown to protect strands from additional damage (and it’s better for the planet). While the number of times per week you wash will depend on your specific hair type, in general, summer is a good time to cut back on the washing.

Use Quality Products

Good quality products can more effectively restore damaged hair and maintain healthy hair. Many lines and products would be considered quality, and hairstylists are a good resource to ask for recommendations. Here are a few of my favorites:

Use Conditioner Before Swimming

If you plan on jumping in the pool, be sure to prep your hair before you go! Both pools and ocean water can be damaging to your locks. So, before you dunk your head use a conditioner on dry hair. I know this sounds weird, but trust me. Those after-pool tangles will vanish. After applying the conditioner, tie hair into a braid or another proactive style, and really watch the magic happen. After swimming you can rinse hair with cold water, then shampoo and condition if necessary.

Don’t Neglect Scalp Care

We often focus on the stands of hair and forget about the root! Our scalp health is very important for our hair growth. In the summer, our scalp is just as vulnerable to salty water and the sun. To improve scalp health this summer try incorporating a scrub into your routine. Scrubs will help remove any remaining product, dead skin cells, and dirt.

UV Protection

Supergoop powderWe all know the importance of using SPF on your face all year, but during the summer it’s important to protect your hair as well. Choose quality products from reputable brands that have products specifically designed with UV defense in hair (similar to how other sunblocks have the potential to discolor clothes.) Another great way to get some extra protection is by using accessories. Try a hat, scarf, visor, cap, or bandana for a different look with added safety and fashion.

Switch Up Styles to Avoid Extra Heat

Protective styling and switching styles often are both ways to keep tangles at bay and retain extra moisture. So if you are a high pony girl, switch to a braid. Or if you love a good half up look, give a low pony a try. It’s not necessarily about the style you choose; it’s about giving strands a break from being under tension. And speaking of stress on the hair, ditch the heat! Turn down the heat on hot tools or ditch them all together if you can!

Finding a routine and products that will work for you can be a hair game changer. Following these easy tips can have your hair looking and feeling its best all summer long.
