Here’s Why You Should Practice Self-Care Every Day

Hey Moms! 2021 has already been quite the year. And yes, self-care is such a buzz word BUT it’s time to shift focus to yourself!  Here’s why you should be practicing self-care EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.

Rates of burnout, depression, and anxiety have been steadily increasing over the last decade or so and the COVID-19 pandemic and more recently, SNOVID-21 have further exacerbated the issue of mental health.  We are living in a society in which the expectation is to constantly be productive.  And, sadly, taking a few minutes of self-care often results in a slew of underhanded compliments and negative remarks from colleagues and strangers alike; You know the type: “I wish I had the time to get my nails done like you do, but I have a full-time job and I try to spend every moment I have off with my kids….”  *Queue the eyeroll*

It’s not only unfair to place yourself behind everyone and everything else in your life, but it’s actually detrimental to your mental health.  In fact, choosing not to practice self-care is counter-productive since poor mental health has been proven to reduce both physical performance and cognitive performance.  So, next time someone tries to tell you that they’re SO productive because they don’t stop to take care of themselves, know that they’re more likely to be anywhere from 20%-35% less productive than those who do.

“But, I don’t have time for self-care….”

Time is the most used excuse in the book.  We ALL have time for what we make time for.  But, no one said self-care needs to take an exorbitant amount of time either.  Self-care could literally be repeating a positive mantra to yourself on your way to work instead of listening to the radio.  Self-care could be taking a 10 minute bubble bath instead of your usual rushed shower.  Self-care could be getting up 15 minutes earlier to write down a few things you’re thankful for while enjoying a cup of coffee. Self-care could be an hour long walk with your favorite podcast. Self-care does not have to be a 3 hour spa day or trip to the nail salon; It absolutely can be though!

To summarize, there are a lot of reasons to practice self-care – improved mental health, productivity, increased energy, and better relationships are just a few.  To reap the full benefits of consistent self-care, you should aim to practice it for at least 5 minutes per day.  For more simple self-care ideas, check out this blog written by our friends at Next Level Urgent Care
