How to Become a Mommy Book Nerd

A few months ago, I shared My Favorite Reads of 2014.  While I only shared a handful of favorites, I confessed that I’d exceeded my Goodreads goal of 50 books – by reading 57 – last year!  The most common response I received was, “How?!  How do you have the time?”  Even my husband {who obviously lives with me} couldn’t figure out when I’d read all of these books.

The truth is that I love reading so much that I make a habit of carving out time wherever I can.  Like my favorite Disney princess Belle, I love escaping to “far away places” – even if I have outgrown the sword fights, ogres, and disguised princes.  I know as mothers it’s difficult to find three hours at a time to just sit and read without being interrupted by one thing or another.

So here are my favorite places to read a chapter or two…

  • Pumping/Nursing :: Okay, so I’m actually not breastfeeding any longer.  But this was one of my favorite times to read.  I actually mastered the art of holding the pump equipment with one hand and my phone {with the Kindle app open} in the other.
  • Bedtime :: Most evenings, I spend time with my hubby after the child goes to bed.  But I always have a cut off and make sure I’m getting ready for bed and curled up with a book at a decent time.  I find that if I spend some time with my favorite characters, I fall asleep much easier.  It’s my favorite way to unwind after a hectic day.
  • In Line :: While I do most of my reading on my iPad, I always sync to my Kindle app so I can bust out my phone to read while I’m in line at the bank or in a waiting room at the doctor’s office.
  • Lunch Break :: Whether I go home for lunch or take my lunch to a park near the office, I spend most of my lunch hours reading while I eat.
  • Naptime :: I am blessed with a child who loves long naps.  I have time to straighten up the house or knock out basic chores, then curl up on the couch with a book.
  • Pedicures :: I don’t get pedicures as often post-kiddo as I used to, but it’s still one of my favorite reading places.  I mean, soaking my feet in the pedicure bath and reading the newest book by my favorite author?  It doesn’t get much better than that.

If you need a suggestion for a new book, join me and Bre’onna for our HMB Summer Book Club!  We’re all going to read the same book together over the course of a few weeks, then get back together and share our thoughts.  And there will even be a book nerd meet up at the end of the summer!
