Living the Dream with Shared Values and Shared Lives

Houston Moms is proud to partner with Cohousing Houston, bringing you information about how you can join their new community in our area!

Imagine a neighborhood that integrates green design with a social, supportive shared living community. Neighbors know one another and connect on a regular basis. They work together in the community garden, have dinner together in the common dining room, walk together on the common trails, care about each other’s lives, and even watch out for each other’s children playing in the green space.

Sounds like the dream, right? But it’s not just a dream. CoHousing Houston, the first co-housing community in Texas, is nearing completion on the construction of their new neighborhood in the East End. And they want to share the power of community with you!

rendering of a cohousing communityWhat is Co-housing?

Co-housing fosters sustainability and connection through physical spaces where neighbors intentionally interact with others just outside their own private homes. And currently, this brand new cohousing community is looking for other individuals and families of all ages to join in their vision of a multigenerational community! With a focus on connection and sustainability, CoHousing Houston was specifically designed to foster interaction among residents and promote sustainability. The property includes a 4,000+ square foot Common House where residents will gather for community dinners, meetings, and celebrations. There are shared walkways and private kitchens that look out over a shared green space. It will also include shared plots in a community garden with a kitchen garden for community use.

Shared Values

CoHousing Houston is focused on both community and sustainability. With a centrally-located outdoor play space for children, this neighborhood is absolutely perfect for young families. Imagine preparing dinner in your private kitchen while you look out your window into the shared yard where the kids play together. There will be ample bike parking and even a planned car share program in the works. The use of geothermal heat exchange will replace traditional HVAC units and the buildings were purposely oriented to maximize solar energy generating capabilities. Truly a sustainability dream come true!

CoHousing Houston is designed intentionally to create connection among its members. It’s a set of individual homes that share green space, a common house and other amenities, and built to make it as easy as possible to get to know your neighbors and spend time with them. You’ll still have your own private home but there is an emphasis on community and care for one another that’s hard to find elsewhere.

Shared Living

The common house and recreation areas are meant to be the very heart of the community. They provide a place for activities like common dinners and numerous other organized formal and informal activities and events. Residents have been involved since early in the design and development phases so that the community reflects their priorities. It’s a close knit neighborhood looking for new members that seek a healthy blend of both privacy and community.

While the buildings are currently under construction, the members of CoHousing Houston are busy working out the agreements that make cohousing a connected and sustainable community.  They make decisions as a group using consensus which is a process committed to finding solutions that everyone actively supports.
