Meg :: How I Became a Mother

How I Became a Mother LogoMeg’s Story

Iโ€™ve been a performer since the ripe age of three, but motherhood is, by far, the best role Iโ€™ve ever taken on. It came to me by surprise, constantly keeps me on my feet, and gives me so much joy.

I wish I could sit here and tell you that I have an inspiring story. I am in awe of my fellow contributorsโ€™ stories and everything they have dealt with – from infertility, to prematurity, to incredible stories of ย rare complications, to multiples, and everything else in-between.

The fact of the matter is, I got pregnant by surprise, and I didnโ€™t think I was ready to be a mom. My husband and I were not trying because we thought we needed a few more years to get settled and be more secure. I took two weeks off my birth control {due to sheer laziness} and got pregnant. Whoever said birth control takes months to get out of your system was lying. Motherhood: 1, Meg: 0.

When I found out I was pregnant, I was already nine weeks along. I took about six or seven pregnancy tests because I just felt ‘off,’ all of which returned a positive result. When I had my ‘pregnancy confirmation’ appointment, my OB-GYN gave me that first ultrasound {by the way, nobody told me they put that thing up…there!} and said, โ€œOh, youโ€™re pregnant alright.โ€ We immediately heard Kennedyโ€™s heart beat. Forget having to knowingly go through a pregnancy for forty weeks. My time to prepare was shortened by two months. Motherhood: 2, Meg: 0.

I had a baby and that baby had a heartbeat. That moment was exhilarating. We were going to be parents in seven short months! We were having a Christmas baby! And forget having to wait to tell everyone since I was practically out of my first trimester.

The next thing we do? Bought a house and moved in. Nesting was in full effect, people. I made that happen in a month. We made all the preparations for the baby to come. We found out we were having a girl and were so excited to welcome her. Plenty of showers, baby books being read, and even baby CPR classes.

My pregnancy was so easy. I felt great all the time. I did prenatal yoga once a week and really felt like myself, aside from the fifty pounds I gained due to being obsessed with desserts. Maybe the most stressful part of my pregnancy was when my purse got stolen and my husband, Greg, chased down the hobo and got it back. Motherhood: 2, Greg: 1, Meg: 0.

They say you never go into labor on your due date. Guess what? I did. Believe it or not, all of the most welcomed advice you receive when you are pregnant isnโ€™t necessarily true. I know, shocker.

On the morning of my due date, despite a โ€œtrickleโ€ of water, I went to work. I was determined to work every single day up until the Christmas break. Although everything up until this point was easy, my labor day was not.

No, there werenโ€™t serious complications, just more like ridiculous frustrations. Like when my doctor said he wouldnโ€™t be there to deliver my baby because he had a Christmas party to go to. Or when my family almost got kicked out of the hospital when they tried to bring like twenty people in my hospital room and then proceeded to make a ruckus in the hallway. Or when I pushed for three hours and nothing happened. Or when I had to wait in line for two hours to have a c-section because that night was particularly busy in the operating room. Or when I had pushed so effectively that it put me in the most excruciating pain when I had to wait for said c-section. Or whenever the cord blood donation people came by and said they had to throw my placenta and cord blood stuff in the trash because they didnโ€™t take donations on Saturdays.

At the end of it all, the most beautiful Christmas gift Iโ€™ve ever received entered the world on December 17, 2011. Two years ago today. None of the frustrations of that day even mattered. We had Kennedy.

Kennedy, that precious baby who, to this day, is the most joyful girl. I mean, she simply smiles with her entire body and warms my heart. She is my eternal Christmas. And it’s my story.

Because I became a mother eight days before, Christmas is an amazing reminder for me that I am not in control. God always has a bigger and better plan for my family, and God has a bigger plan for me. Meg: always 0.
