National School Choice Week: Discover the Options

Are you looking for the right school for your kids? Maybe you’re struggling to know what your options are and how to select a school that will be a good fit. It can be an overwhelming process! And a stressful one, especially if you feel your child is not thriving in their current school. National School Choice Week (NSCW) is right around the corner- January 26-February 1. This week-long celebration focuses on spreading awareness of the many different types of schools and educational options available to parents and families. Each year, in honor of National School Choice Week, Families Empowered, a Texas nonprofit, hosts a school connection event in the Greater Houston area. Whether your child is entering PreK, high school, or somewhere in between, this event will is a great way to discover and learn more about the various school options available.

This year, Families Empowered is excited to host their PreK-12 school connection event for Houston parents. Their annual NSCW Houston School Fair is completely free and offers a great way for you and your family to connect with private, district, charter, and magnet schools all in one place! Join in the fun at Minute Maid Park on Saturday, January 18 for this family friendly day out. Come out to meet and connect with representatives from local area schools before the 2025-26 school year even begins. Discover your options and find a great fit for your child.

While the event is completely free, you will need to RSVP. And as a bonus, all families that RSVP and attend this year’s NSCW Houston School Fair will have free access to the Minute Maid Park batting cages and be entered to win exciting giveaways! Don’t miss your chance to win a free Chromebook, electric scooter, tickets to the Main Street Theater, and more. Be sure to RSVP and check-in at the fair as these are the requirements for entry to the giveaways.

Families Empowered is a Texas-based nonprofit dedicated to empowering parents with the resources and information they need to find schools that best fit their children. For the past 15 years, Families Empowered has provided free, bilingual support to families in order to help them explore their various school options. They know just how overwhelming the school choice process can be and they are dedicated to helping parents navigate their school journey with ease. Each year, they host family-friendly events across Texas, including the annual NSCW Houston School Fair, to bring parents and local area schools together under one roof.

At last year’s Houston School Fair in 2024, Families Empowered actually connected over 500 families with more than 40 schools and community organizations! Along with batting cages and giveaways, there will also be a range of other family friendly activities including face painting, live music, a photo booth, and free snacks.

Bethany, the daughter of an army chaplain and a special education teacher, grew up moving every 2-3 years. She considers herself an introvert who had to learn how to make friends quickly! She met her Houstonian husband, Paul, in college and they married in 2004. They first settled just north of Houston, where she earned her master's degree at Sam Houston State in School Psychology. After working in public education for a couple of years, she decided to stay home full time with their children, Charlie {2008}, Norah {2010}, and Will {2013}.
