How to Apply for Texas School Vouchers for the 2026-2027 School Year

If you’re considering private school, homeschooling, or other educational options for your child next year, there is good news: Texas is rolling out a new Texas school voucher program known as Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA). These education savings accounts can help families pay for tuition, tutoring, lessons and more, giving Texas families more choice in how your children learn. If you would like to apply for one of these Texas school vouchers, here’s what you need to know and where to start.

What Are Texas School Vouchers?

School vouchers, which in Texas are officially called Education Savings Accounts, allow the state to set aside a portion of public school funding so families can use it for approved education costs at private or home-school programs. The TEFA program was created through legislation signed into law in 2025 and will begin serving families for the 2026–27 school year.

Funds vary depending on a student’s situation, with around $10,400 available for private school students, up to $30,000 for students with special needs (student must meet eligibility criteria), and smaller amounts for homeschool expenses.

Note: Even if your child is eligible, they are not guaranteed funding. If applicants who are eligible exceed funds that are available, participation will be determined by a lottery process.

Important Dates for Families

If you are considering applying here are key application and funding dates to keep on your calendar:

Feb. 4, 2026: Family applications open through the official TEFA portal. This is the date you can start submitting your child’s application to receive voucher funds for 2026–27.

March 17–20, 2026: The application window closes. Be sure to file before this deadline!

May 1, 2026: Families will receive notification of their award status. They will be approved, waitlisted, or not funded.

July 1, 2026: Funds begin rolling into parents’ digital accounts in time to use for fall tuition and expenses.

How to Apply

When the application portal opens on Feb. 4, 2026, you’ll submit your application online through the TEFA system. You’ll need to create an account, provide basic information about your child (name, age, residency, school plans), and upload required documents. These may include proof of Texas residency and, if necessary, documentation for priority categories (such as special education services).

You can sign up to receive updates straight from the state at the Texas Education Freedom Accounts website.

Tips for Busy Moms

  • Start gathering documents now. You’ll need birth certificates, proofs of residency, IEPs (if applicable), and any private school enrollment paperwork.
  • Verify that your school of choice is on the approved TEFA list before you apply.
  • Mark reminders for the February 4 start and the March 17–20 deadline so you don’t miss your chance.

Applying for Texas school vouchers can seem overwhelming, but with a plan and early preparation, you’ll be ready when the window opens. Good luck moms, and here’s to finding the right educational path for your child!
