Now more than ever, we are living in a connected world. With connectivity comes communication. And what better way to expand our communication than by learning a new language?
I restarted my French studies about 2 years ago (after forgetting a majority of what I learned from 3 years of high school French) and have really enjoyed some new ways of learning a second language.
While learning a new language can seem daunting, by using some of these tools, you can add learning into your everyday life without much effort. Even just 5 minutes a day can add up. No matter the language you choose, set yourself up for success and have ideas ready to explore as you progress in your bilingual journey.
Language Learning Apps
Language learning apps are my favorite way for new learners to get started. There are so many different options for language learning apps on all devices. Some of my favorites are Duolingo, Babbel, and Rosetta Stone. Some apps are free, and some have a fee so be sure to look before you subscribe. These apps can send reminders each day to complete a small lesson and progress you toward your goals. The entertaining stories, streak challenges, and friend requests have me logging on each day and getting my lesson in! 10/10 would recommend checking these out!
Entertainment
Once you have a base knowledge of the language and want to test your comprehension skills, I highly recommend taking in some content in the new language. I recently started watching Disney Plus with my kids with the French subtitles on and I read along as the movie plays. I can already tell that my understanding has improved. It’s important to hear languages in speeches, music, conversation, and many other ways to fully start to understand how the language is meant to be spoken.
Sticky Notes
We are going back to old school pen and paper with this one. Use some sticky notes and label things around the house. Tag everyday items with your new language and watch as your repertoire explodes. Seeing the words around even subconsciously will help new terms stick into your mind and come more easily when you are looking for them. This seems like a small job but really can have a big impact. My family has even caught on to a few words, so everyone is learning some French!
College Classes
This option does come with a fee, but when you are ready to expand your language and learn from some of the best teachers, there are online courses through colleges that offer language programs. I really enjoyed the French course I took at a Texas university. I met students from all around who were also learning a new language later in life, so it was an all-around great experience.
Teach Others
The true test if we have learned something is to teach it right? Use your new skills and knowledge to show others and teach them words. I love learning new phrases in any language and try to share my knowledge with people. Kids love learning fun jokes and punch lines! If you feel like you are ready to exchange knowledge some programs can match you with another learner and you will converse with each other and teach each other your own language. What a great way to learn and make a friend.
I hope these tips for learning a new language help feel inspired to learn another way to communicate and connect with others.
