When I was younger, my favorite outings were to the bookstore in our local mall. The smell of the books. The rush to see the latest book in my favorite series. The joy of taking it home and disappearing into that book for hours.
At the beginning of the summer, I tried that same trick with my own kids. Appreciating that book store smell – the delicate pages you can smell right when you walk in. Though I am not sure they appreciated my attempt, I won’t stop sharing my joy of reading.
And this month is the perfect reason to share ways to celebrate the beauty of books. August 9th is National Book Lovers Day. Whether you are a lifelong reader or have recently found the power of books, there are some awesome ways for you (and your family) to celebrate this important day.
Dig into an Audiobook
My favorite way to find any kind of book – and currently, an audio one – is to get a library card from a local library. Once you do this, you can set up your Libby account and start checking out books of interest. You can even search a wide variety of audiobooks and start listening! I love an audiobook while cleaning and driving. And yes, listening to a book counts as reading.
Start a Book Club
Starting a book club is easier said than done with schedules filled with responsibilities. For now, maybe the book club is just via text or social media. Pick one and share thoughts. Of course, if you can meet in person – grab your wine and cheese boards and get to talking. I love sharing books with other reader friends. I find some of my best reads this way.
Fill your Feed
My number one way to find books is through Facebook or Instagram. Search hashtags like #bookstagram, #bookstagrammers, and #bookrecommendations. My current favorite to follow for book recommendations, from romance to thrillers, is @beachreadsandbubbly. She is a wonder for all the book lovers out there!
Support Local Bookstores
Of course, patronize local libraries. Take your kids and let them pick out books while you look for a good read yourself. But, don’t forget about those smaller bookstores that celebrate often with events and author visits. Houston has some good ones!
So, tell us, Houston moms – what are you reading? How do you plan to celebrate all the books on National Book Lovers Day? It’s time to open those pages and get lost in a story. Words are the best escape.
