Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in Houston

When I first moved to Houston from southern Oregon more than a decade ago, one of the things that struck me most was the richness of Hispanic culture woven into daily life here. The music, the food, the traditions, the celebrations — together they create a joy and sense of community that feels uniquely Houston. Hispanic Heritage Month, observed from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, is a chance for all of us to celebrate these contributions, learn more about our neighbors’ stories, and share in the beauty of cultures that shape our city.family celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month in Houston

The celebration itself began in 1968 when Texas native President Lyndon Johnson set aside a week to honor the historical and cultural contributions made by people of Mexico, Spain, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. Twenty years later, President Ronald Reagan expanded the observance to a full month. Today, it’s a time to remember that when we help our children learn about different cultures and ways of life, we’re giving them the gift of empathy, respect, and a bigger view of the world. That’s especially meaningful considering one in four children in the United States is of Hispanic origin — their traditions, languages, and stories deserve to be celebrated and shared.

For many families, Hispanic Heritage Month is personal. It’s a reminder of roots, of heritage, of gathering with loved ones around the table late into the night. For others, it’s an invitation to discover the beauty of cultures that may not be their own but enrich us all. However you enter into it, I encourage you to step into these celebrations with your family this year. You’ll find that Hispanic Heritage Month is about more than heritage. It’s about community, connection, and joy!
