FREE Family Fun in Galveston!

Headed to Galveston this summer? While we love the beach, sometimes everyone needs a little break from the heat. We’ve got the perfect solution for those hot summer beach days that’s family friendly, fun, and educational. This hidden gem even offers FREE admission on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. What could be better?
The Galveston County Museum, located in the Galveston County courthouse building, offers family friendly fun (and air conditioning!). Beat the heat or escape those afternoon thunderstorms here while learning all about the incredible and fascinating history of the island. Opened in 1976, it was originally located on Market Street for many years. However, after Hurricane Ike damaged the HVAC and electrical systems in 2008, it was moved to the courthouse building located at 722 Moody/21st Street.

Explore their incredible collection of over 20,000 artifacts and archives—from Mardi Gras to military memorabilia to a Smithsonian‑featured delivery bicycle from a Tropea corner store. You definitely won’t want to miss the coroner’s book from their exhibit on the 1900 Storm. Personal items were collected and documented to help family members identify their lost loved ones after the historic storm.

The Galveston County Museum also includes several other exhibits, including Military History, Immigration Stories, Gambling History, and even a Mardi Gras costume gallery! If you are looking for some extra hands-on fun, you can schedule ahead to play their exciting Padlock Mystery Game. Designed for small groups of people ages 8 and older, this interactive game is only offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so be sure to call ahead to make an appointment! When you play this game, your group gains exclusive access to the museum while hunting for clues to open locked boxes. You’ll uncover Galveston history together while solving puzzles for a prize. How fun and unique is that?
