Houston Rodeo Fashion: A Stylish Mama’s Guide

Houston Rodeo Fashion: A Stylish Mama’s Guide

Y’all, it’s that time of year again—Houston Rodeo season and that means one thing—time to break out the boots and bring the Western vibes! There’s nothing quite like the energy of the rodeo, from the smell of smoked turkey legs to the sound of cowboy boots shuffling through the carnival grounds. As a native Houstonian, I remember being a little kid and hitting the rodeo grounds with my family. Now as a mother of 2, I love making this event a family tradition and that includes being all in on rodeo fashion.

Whether you’re wrangling little ones at the petting zoo, indulging in a deep-fried Oreo moment, or vibing at a country concert, your outfit needs to be equal parts cute, comfy, and functional. Here’s how to serve rodeo-ready looks while keeping it both practical and stylish.

1. The Classic Cowboy Boots

If you only invest in one rodeo staple, let it be a good pair of cowboy boots. Not only do they complete the look, but they’re also comfortable enough for chasing toddlers through the carnival  and standing in long lines for funnel cake.  I love a good distressed leather boot for that effortlessly cool, lived-in vibe. Snakeskin? Suede? A little fringe? Count me in!

For my fellow mamas, comfort is non-negotiable. Look for boots with cushioned insoles because we’re gonna be on our feet all day—from the Ferris wheel to the dance floor! Pro tip: If you’re buying new boots, break them in ahead of time to avoid blisters!

???? Trend alert: Short western booties are having a moment this year, so if you want a modern twist, give those a try!

2. Denim is Your Best Friend

Denim is the unofficial uniform of rodeo season. Whether it’s classic bootcut jeans, a stylish denim skirt, or even a trendy denim jumpsuit, you really can’t go wrong. I love high-waisted jeans because they keep everything in place (moms, you know what I mean!) while giving that effortlessly cool western vibe.

This year, I am also loving:

Flared jeans – Gives that throwback cowgirl energy with a modern fit.
Distressed denim jackets – Adds an effortless, laid-back touch and perfect for chilly nights.
Denim jumpsuits – The easiest way to look put together with minimal effort.

If you’re bringing the kiddos along, denim jackets are a lifesaver for those chilly Texas evenings. Plus, matching denim with your little ones? Instant Instagram moment!

???? Pro tip: Opt for stretchy denim—trust me, you’ll thank me later when you’re squatting to pick up dropped sippy cups every five minutes.

3. Flowy Dresses & Skirts for that Boho Cowgirl Vibe

For mamas who want to stay comfy but cute, a flowy boho dress with cowboy boots is a go-to look. It’s effortless, breathable (because as we all know, Houston weather is unpredictable), and easy to move in.  Bonus points if it has pockets—because we always need extra storage for snacks and wet wipes.

My go to look is a soft, ruffled maxi dress, a statement belt, and my fave cowboy boots. It’s comfy and breezy yet fashionable.

???? Trending: Midi skirts with boots are everywhere right now. Pair a fringe or suede skirt with a cute crop top or oversized sweater for a super on-trend rodeo look.

4. Statement Accessories = Instant Rodeo Glam

Accessories are where you can really show off your personality! A few must-haves:

???? Cowboy Hat – Keeps the sun out of your face and adds instant rodeo flair. Whether you go classic straw or bold felt, it’s the easiest way to level up your look.

???? Turquoise Jewelry – A rodeo staple that pairs beautifully with denim and neutrals. Throw on a chunky ring or layered necklace for instant cowgirl glam.

???? Fringe Bag or Crossbody – Practical and stylish—plus, keeps your hands free for holding little hands (or turkey legs).

If you’re feeling bold, throw in a belt buckle or wild rag (silk scarf) for that extra cowgirl touch.

5. The Ultimate Mom Hack: Layers & Versatility

Houston weather is a whole rollercoaster, so layering is key. A cute tank or graphic tee under a light flannel, denim shacket or fringe jacket keeps you warm in the evening but won’t leave you sweating midday. And for moms with young kids, wear something you can move in—you never know when you’ll have to climb into a petting zoo pen for a rescue mission (ask me how I know).

???? Hot tip: Western-inspired vests are super trendy right now, so if you want to add an edgy, fashion-forward touch to your rodeo outfit—this is it!

6. Matching with the Littles

One of my favorite parts of rodeo fashion is coordinating with my babies. Whether it’s matching plaid shirts, tiny cowboy boots, or mom-and-mini denim jackets, dressing up as a rodeo-ready crew is too cute to pass up.

For boys: Plaid shirts, little jeans, and mini cowboy hats.
For girls: Frilly cowgirl dresses or denim skirts with boots.

Final Thoughts: Own Your Rodeo Moment, Mama!

Houston Rodeo is all about making memories—and looking cute while doing it. Whether you go full Western glam or keep it casual and cute, the key is to feel confident, comfy, and ready for anything (yes, even an unexpected toddler meltdown in the middle of the carnival).

So grab your boots, throw on that hat, and get ready to serve Western chic like the rodeo queen (and mom boss) you are. See y’all at NRG! ????

Ebony grew up in Katy, TX, back when it was more “country roads” than “suburban sprawl.” Back then, Katy had only three high schools and more backroads than places to actually go. Determined to escape her “small town” life, she headed to Washington, DC, where she attended Howard University. It was there she met Richie, her now husband, and some of her best friends—proving that dreams of big cities sometimes come with great sidekicks. After graduation, Ebony and Richie settled in Houston, and she jumped into adult life with the enthusiasm of someone who’s just realized adulting is not a phase. Over the years, she’s tried on many hats—party promoter, volunteer coordinator, social media manager, high school English teacher—but the most fitting one yet is her current role as mother of two: RJ (February 2020) and Quinn (May 2022). Ebony is known for her contagious laugh, her quest to entertain her kids on a shoestring budget, and her tireless advocacy for childhood cancer awareness. On any given day, you’ll find her creating hilariously relatable reels about motherhood, binging reality TV like it’s an Olympic sport, or driving her kids to yet another activity. And if you’re curious about her daily adventures, check out her blog at EbbyLolo.com, where she shares her journey with the same enthusiasm she brings to every new adventure.
