10 Easy Ways to Celebrate the Last Day of School (Without Doing the Most)

preschool girl in cap and gown accepts diplomaMama, we made it! Another school year in the books — and whether it flew by or felt like an eternity, one thing’s for sure: your kids deserve a little celebration… and so do you. But if your energy is running on fumes and Pinterest-level parties just aren’t in your spirit right now, take a deep breath. Celebrating the last day of school doesn’t have to mean glitter explosions, balloon arches, or themed brunches. Sometimes, the best memories are made in the simplest ways.

Here are 10 easy, low-stress ways to celebrate the last day of school — no glue gun or party planner required.

1. After School Ice Cream Social

Nothing says “celebration!” like an ice cream cone (or milkshake, if you’re fancy). Let the kids pick their favorite spot and treat them to a sweet reward. Treat the family to a scoop (or two!) from local gems like Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams — known for their creative flavors, (hello, Brambleberry Crisp!)  or Milk & Sugar, their waffle cones and creative flavors are a treat for both kids and parents. Bonus: no dishes to wash afterward!

2. Take a “Last Day” Photo

It doesn’t have to be fancy — just snap a picture of them in their wrinkled school shirt, holding a sign or throwing their backpack in the air. Whether it’s a traditional “first day vs. last day” comparison or a fun, creative shot, it’s a great way to celebrate the milestone. You can even add a chalkboard with the year, grade level, or their favorite memory from the year. It’s a fun way to look back on the end of the school year and start of the summer!

For an extra memory, consider printing and framing the photo or making it part of a family yearbook.

3. Backyard Water Play

No pool? No problem. Summer fun doesn’t require a resort. Pull out the sprinkler, water balloons, or even just a few cups and a hose. Want to level it up a notch? Set up a simple DIY obstacle course with pool noodles, slip ‘n slides, or plastic bins to jump over. You can even do a “Water Olympics” with silly challenges like sponge tosses, relay races with cups of water, or who can make the biggest splash. Let them get wet, laugh hard, and be kids.

4. Pizza + Movie Night

Sometimes, the best way to celebrate is by keeping it simple — and delicious. Pick a family favorite movie, let the kids stay up just a little later than usual, and order pizza from a local go-to like Pepperoni’s. Whether your crew is all about classic cheese or loves to pile on the toppings, Pepperoni’s hits the spot every time. Yes, please. It’s easy, cozy, and always a win. If you’re up for more challenge, hit the grocery store and pick up your favorite toppings, then spend the evening cheffing up homemade pizza.

5. Let Them “Camp Out” Indoors

Who says camping has to happen outside? Turn your living room into a campsite with blankets, sleeping bags, and a pile of pillows. For that “under the stars” feel, add some battery-powered string lights or flashlights. You can even make s’mores in the microwave (or air fryer!), tell silly or spooky stories, and play camping-themed games like charades or “Would You Rather: Summer Edition.” Want to go all in? Give them glow sticks, let them “pitch” a pop-up tent, and call it the Last Day of School Sleepover Special. It’s magical, mess-free(ish), and the perfect way to ease into slower summer mornings.

6. Create a “Summer Kickoff” Basket

A little surprise can go a long way — and a “Summer Kickoff” basket is the perfect way to say, let the fun begin! Don’t overthink it — grab a basket, beach tote, or even a brown paper bag, and fill it with a few simple summer goodies. Think bubbles, sidewalk chalk, sunglasses, flip-flops, sunscreen, glow sticks, a fun water bottle, a summer reading book, or a popsicle mold. You can even add a handwritten note that says, “You made it! I’m so proud of you.”

Want to go the extra mile? Include a summer “bucket list” your family can fill out together — with ideas like “have a picnic,” “try a new park,” or “make a lemonade stand.” It’s a fun, thoughtful way to kick off the season without spending a ton.

7. Host a Family Game Night

Make the last day of school even more fun by hosting a family game tournament! Choose a few of your kids’ favorite board games, card games, or even video games, and turn it into a friendly competition. You can create a simple bracket, keep score, and give out silly prizes like a homemade medal, extra dessert, or a “game night champion” title.

Whether you’re playing Monopoly, charades, or your favorite mobile games, the goal is to have fun, and maybe even discover a new family favorite game for the summer.

8. Plant A Summer Garden

Celebrate the last day of school by planting the seeds for new memories! Grab some small pots, soil, and a few summer-friendly plants and have a family gardening session. Let each child pick their own plant to care for throughout the summer. Not only will it give them a sense of responsibility, but it’s also a fun, hands-on way to spend quality time together. In Houston’s hot and humid summer climate, it’s important to choose plants that thrive in the heat and humidity– think cucumbers, tomatoes and sunflowers.

9. Chalk the Driveway

Grab some sidewalk chalk and write fun messages like “School’s Out!” or “Hello, Summer!” Let your kids go wild decorating the driveway. Use this time as a way to reflect on all that they have accomplish by creating a “Walk of Fame”. Draw stars with their accomplishments from the year — “Read 10 books,” “Learned multiplication,” “Made new friends.” It’s not only a fun and heartfelt way to reflect on the growth they’ve had, and it makes for a perfect photo backdrop, too!

10. Just Say It: “I’m Proud of You.”

Sometimes the most meaningful thing is simply looking your child in the eyes and saying, “I saw how hard you worked this year. I’m so proud of you.” That moment of connection? That’s the real celebration.

The Bottom Line: You don’t need to throw a party to make the last day of school feel special. With a little intention and a whole lot of love, the smallest gestures can make the biggest impact. So whether you’re high-fiving at the bus stop or handing out popsicles on the porch, remember: you’ve done enough, Mama — and your kids feel it.

Here’s to a summer full of rest, joy, and a little bit of freedom for us all. ☀️

Ebony grew up in Katy, TX, back when it was more “country roads” than “suburban sprawl.” Back then, Katy had only three high schools and more backroads than places to actually go. Determined to escape her “small town” life, she headed to Washington, DC, where she attended Howard University. It was there she met Richie, her now husband, and some of her best friends—proving that dreams of big cities sometimes come with great sidekicks. After graduation, Ebony and Richie settled in Houston, and she jumped into adult life with the enthusiasm of someone who’s just realized adulting is not a phase. Over the years, she’s tried on many hats—party promoter, volunteer coordinator, social media manager, high school English teacher—but the most fitting one yet is her current role as mother of two: RJ (February 2020) and Quinn (May 2022). Ebony is known for her contagious laugh, her quest to entertain her kids on a shoestring budget, and her tireless advocacy for childhood cancer awareness. On any given day, you’ll find her creating hilariously relatable reels about motherhood, binging reality TV like it’s an Olympic sport, or driving her kids to yet another activity.
