The calendar says September, which means I am officially declaring it fall. Sure, in Houston the weather hasn’t quite caught on (and probably won’t for a while), but that’s not stopping me. The minute September hits, my brain shifts to pumpkin patches, hayrides, Halloween costumes, and every outdoor family adventure I can possibly squeeze in before the holiday rush. Even if we’re sweating through our “fall” festivals in shorts and sandals, it still counts. Because fall isn’t just about the weather — it’s about making those cozy family memories, one pumpkin or apple spice treat at a time. (Note: not all of these activities are perfect for every family or every age range, so definitely consider that before you make any concrete plans.)
An obvious staple of the season is pumpkin picking. If you’re looking for spots to do that or maybe to hit up a fall festival, we have you covered in this post . A lot of cultural festivals happen in the fall too and we’ve got that list here. But keep scrolling for plenty more ideas to keep you and the fam busy over the next few months.
Explore the Great Outdoors
Cooler weather (eventually!) makes it the perfect season to get outside as a family. Houston may not be New England, but we still get pops of orange, red, and gold in our parks and it’s the best excuse to snap family photos and let the kids crunch through the leaves. Pack up some snacks and hit a local trail — we’re spoiled with so many greenspaces like the Houston Arboretum, Terry Hershey Park, and Brazos Bend State Park. And if you want to extend your adventure, pitch a tent or try glamping at a nearby campground. Roasting marshmallows, telling stories under the stars, and waking up to crisp air? That’s the kind of memory that sticks with your kids forever.
Celebrate Oktoberfest
From brats to polka music, Oktoberfest brings a taste of Germany to Texas. Many festivals are family-friendly, with live music, games, and food for all ages. Parents can sample a seasonal brew while the kids enjoy giant pretzels and dancing. Here are a few options: Karbachtoberfest (Sept. 19-21, Sept. 26-28, Oct. 3-5), Oktoberfest at Fass Brewing (Sept. 27), Missouri City Oktoberfest (Sept. 20), Oktoberfest at B52 Brewing (Sept. 20), Oktoberfest at Sugar Land Town Square (Oct. 4), Oktoberfest at Kemah Boardwalk, Island Oktoberfest (Oct. 24-25), The Kingwood Oktoberfest (Oct. 18).
Visit haunted and spooky spots
Fall is the season for all things spooky! Check out one of Houston’s haunted houses if your kids are older or stick to kid-friendly options like ghost tours, pumpkin walks, or “not-so-scary” Halloween trails. A little fright can be a lot of fun when everyone’s in it together.
Stroll spooky trails
Many neighborhoods and gardens decorate with scarecrows, pumpkins, or themed displays. Taking the kids to see these creative setups is a low-key but festive way to enjoy the season. If you need some suggestions, try Bayland Avenue in Woodland Heights, 3100 block of Robinson Road in Missouri City, or the west end of Sunset Boulevard in West University.
Navigate corn mazes & hayrides
Nothing feels more like fall than a day on the farm. Corn mazes give kids the thrill of solving a giant puzzle they can actually walk through while hayrides are the ultimate cozy ride — complete with bumpy laughter, blankets, and often a stop for cider or treats. Many farms offer both in one visit (usually with a pumpkin patch to boot), making it an easy way to pack in all the fall fun without driving all over town.
Time travel at the Texas Renaissance Festival
This one’s a Texas tradition. Costumes, jousting, turkey legs bigger than your head — it’s an experience like no other. Families love the chance to step back in time for a day and let their imaginations run wild.
Gaze at the stars
Fall skies are usually clearer, making it the perfect time to spot constellations. Grab a blanket, a thermos of hot cocoa, and head outside — or visit George Observatory for a guided experience.
Learn through play
Fall is the perfect time to sneak in a little education while still keeping things fun. Create a fall sensory bin to encourage exploration of the senses (and sneak in new vocabulary like “crunchy” and “smooth”). Head outside for a nature scavenger hunt that works for kids of any age or try an acorn alphabet matching game for your preschooler. Your local library’s story-time is another great option — Harris County Public Library has a full list of events. If you want to tie the season into literacy, try “apple picking for reading,” or go full science mode with an erupting pumpkin experiment.
Craft fall fun
When the weather keeps you indoors — or you just want a cozy afternoon project — fall crafts are the perfect go-to. Little ones will love footprint ghosts, potato stamps, and turkey hand-print art, while older kids can take on bigger projects like felt leaf garlands or decorated pumpkins. Don’t toss those broken crayons; turn them into leaf rubbings instead. Try pumpkin spice playdough, tissue paper pumpkins, or even DIY soap slime for bath-time giggles.
Cheer and tailgate together
Nothing screams fall in Texas quite like football, and the whole family can get in on the fun. Friday night lights at your local high school, a college game day at Rice, Houston, Stephen F. Austin, or Sam Houston State, or a big Texans matchup — the atmosphere is always electric. Family-friendly tailgates make it even better with good food, lawn games, and time to hang out before kickoff. Whether you’re there for the band, the cheerleaders, or just the snacks, football season is as much about community as it is about the game.
Bake fall treats
When the weather cools, the kitchen heats up. Bake pumpkin bread, pumpkin muffins, pumpkin rolls, or even homemade cider donuts together. Kids love being the “official taste testers” and your house will smell heavenly as you work through some of these fall recipes.
Build community
Fall is a season of gathering, and it’s also the perfect time to teach kids the joy of giving. Host a playgroup food drive for the Houston Food Bank or let little hands help assemble blessing bags for those in need. Share a seasonal treat with a neighbor, drop cookies at your local fire station, or invite friends over for a Halloween PJ playdate. If you’re looking for bigger get-togethers, plan a Friendsgiving, organize a block party, or host a game-day watch party. Even a garage sale can turn into a teachable moment when kids donate the profits to a shelter (like Star of Hope) or a children’s palliative care center (like Project Joy and Hope).
Enjoy family time
Sometimes the sweetest fall memories happen right at home. Plan a family movie night with popcorn and sleeping bags or build a blanket fort for the kids to crawl into. Backyard (or living room!) campouts with flashlights and tents bring the adventure without leaving behind the indoor plumbing. Classic traditions like picking Halloween costumes, watching It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, or tackling a family puzzle night are simple but special. For something extra, try pumpkin bowling in the driveway or book those fall family portraits you’ve been meaning to schedule — because these are the moments you’ll want to remember.
