As a mom of a 15‑year‑old, it’s rare that I get a clear path to talk about her day‑to‑day life. I try hard to respect her privacy and what she’s comfortable with me sharing. So imagine my excitement that there is real MOVEMENT in Houston — and across Texas — for Girls Flag Football… and my girl is part of it. And YES, I can actually talk about it.
She attends Seven Lakes High School in Katy ISD, and this year the district got the green light to launch Girls Flag Football as a club sport. The hope? That the next step is UIL sanctioning across Texas — and there are a lot of people rooting for that to happen.

Girls across Houston showed up in huge numbers for tryouts. Katy ISD alone reported 100–125 girls competing for just 15–25 spots per team. So why the surge? Why are girls so drawn to a sport that, for so long, felt out of reach? I can only speak for my family: I have a kid who loves to compete in any form. A kid who came off a long, grueling 9th‑grade basketball season and still wanted more. A kid who thrives on challenge and new friendships. And she has found all of that — and more — in Flag Football.
When she first mentioned trying out, I was ALL IN. My kid needs movement, purpose, and community. And throughout the long tryout season, our family was blown away by the professionalism, communication, and most importantly, the PASSION her coach poured into these players. They’re not just tossing a ball around. They’re running plays. They’re snapping (my kid!). They’re catching touchdowns and slicing through defenses. And the defense? They’re sharp, they’re fierce, and they’re FAST.
It has quickly become one of my favorite sports to watch. The joy is palpable. They celebrate. They decorate their cleats. They’ve built a camaraderie that is incredibly special to witness as a parent.

So why does this matter? Representation. Matters. These girls are stepping into a space that has almost exclusively been labeled a “boys’ sport.” And yes, I may or may not yell “PASS INTERFERENCE, REF!” when I shouldn’t — but we’re a passionate bunch. Some of these girls have never been student athletes before, and now they’re seeing themselves do something brand new in our area.
And the big names are paying attention. The Texans and Cowboys — along with multiple NFL teams nationwide — are funding these programs so girls can have this opportunity. Colleges are launching programs with real scholarship money on the table.
How can you support? Easy. Come watch a game (or three — they often play multiple back‑to‑back on Saturday mornings). Bring your younger kids. If you have a girl who’s interested, start exploring the programs popping up across Houston and Texas. And CHEER. Cheer loudly for these trailblazers. I know my daughter will never forget being part of this first wave. A forever memory.
