You may be surprised to learn that National Pie Day is actually on January 23 and not on March 14 (that’s Pi Day!), but March 14th happens to be my birthday and pie is one of my very favorite things to eat in the entire world, so in my home we always celebrate Pie Day on Pi Day!
I would, hands down, choose pie over cake any day, and thankfully Houston has plenty of options to pick up a slice, or a whole pie. Here are my recommendations for the best places to grab a slice around town and also some of my favorite recipes and tools for DIY-ing it at home if you so choose.
Spots for the Best Pie in Houston:
- Y’all knew we were gonna kick this list off with House of Pies, right? House of Pies is a crowd favorite for good reason. My personal favorites here are the Bayou Goo and Coconut Cream, but you can’t go wrong with any of the options off their extensive menu. Plus, they’re open 24/7, so you can fulfill that pie craving any time, any day!
- Number two on the list is Proud Pie. They are now in all Dish Society locations around town. I first tried their pies when they were a small business operating out of a location in Katy, and I was absolutely blown away. I mean, these are seriously good pies. I have never had a bad pie here, but here’s my order if I had to order them: Ghirardelli Chocolate Silk Pie, Lemon Chess Pie with Blueberries, Key Lime Pie, Snickerdoodle Peach Pie, Michigan State Cherry Crumble, and the Blueberry Dutch Crumble (told you they were all good).
- Third on my list is The Pie Factory. The Pie Factory is another local shop that has served the Houston community for over 40 years! I gravitate toward the fruit pies here: apple, blueberry, cherry, lemon meringue or dutch blueberry… you really can’t go wrong!
- Next up is Flying Saucer Pie Shop! Their pies are made fresh daily and so good that they are “out of this world!” The cream pies are fantastic here- and they also have a special selection of seasonal pies around the holidays, too! Our friends took their chocolate cream pie to Friendsgiving last year and it was phenomenal.
- If you’re looking for a special gift that has local flair, you can’t go wrong with Goode Co.’s Brazos Bottom Pecan Pie. You can pick it up or have it shipped straight to your recipient, and it comes in a special wooden box. It is also super delicious with a steaming mug of hot coffee! Their banana cream pie is also AMAZING (not mail friendly, sorry!).
- I love going to Cleburne Cafeteria when I’m craving some Southern homestyle cooking, and I am happy to share that their desserts are as good as the food! My kids really love their chocolate icebox pie–mmm, delish!
- Moeller’s Bakery is another Houston sweet shop that’s been around forever. Though my personal favorite here is the Lemon Chiffon Cake, their pies are lovely, too! Order online for speedy pickup.
- If you’re looking for something a little more luxurious, and deliciously made, you can order whole pies from Noble’s from Wednesday – Sunday. They have a set menu you can order from, and also rotate specials each week. Their black bottom salted caramel pie is to die for when it’s available!
Make Your Own Pie
Don’t feel like driving all over town for pie in Houston? Not to worry, I got you! Here’s what you’ll need to get your pie game on at home!
The Tools:
A good pie begins with a good base, and having an extra large pastry mat for rolling out your dough makes pie-making so
much easier. I love this non-slip silicone pastry mat that I got off Amazon for all my pie crust needs, but if you want to splurge, then this highly recommended
jumbo Roul ’Pat has been on my wishlist for ages. My favorite rolling pin these days is one that was gifted to me, this J.K. Adams French Tapered Rolling Pin. The tapered ends make it a dream to use.
The Recipes:
When I want to turn out a good pie, I always fall back on my favorite pie crust recipe of all time: Melissa Clark’s Pie Crust recipe from the New York Times. This no-fail recipe works perfectly in sweet and savory pies alike {try it with chicken pot pie- it’s literally THE BEST} and keeps well in the freezer. I like making extras and keeping a few discs on hand in case a craving strikes. Here’s a {starter} list of pie recipes that I’ve personally made and loved. Enjoy!
