Go Touch Grass! Health Benefits to Getting Outside in Nature

We are proud to partner with UTMB Health to share with Houston Moms how to prioritize their families' health.

Go touch grass! The latest in teen slang/mild insults actually has some wisdom to it. As much time as our kids (and let’s be honest, us moms too) spend staring at screens, it would benefit us greatly to go outside and well, touch grass. Getting outside in nature has numerous health benefits, both physiologically and mentally. And this time of year, with the stress and busyness of the holiday season, we should take any health benefits we can get!

Check out this video from UTMB about how to reap the benefits of getting outside in nature.

Prioritizing Mindfulness

Getting outside in nature promotes mindfulness, which allows us to be more deeply connected with our inner selves. Just a few minutes of outside time a day can reduce stress, improve sleep, and improve cardiovascular health. But in the case of getting outside in nature, more is definitely more. Dr. Kimberly Gushanas, a licensed clinical psychologist with the University of Texas Medical Branch, said in a recent article:

“We know that in general, the more you get out in nature, the more you experience better moods and less stress,” she said. “You are even at lower risk for psychiatric disorders like depression, anxiety, substance misuse, and even Schizophrenia. Research has even shown that the more time you spend with nature, the more cooperative, generous, and empathetic you are.”

It really is that simple. But in our fast-paced, screen-obsessed society we often take for granted or just plain forget that nature not only exists, but exists to make us healthy and happy.

Where to Explore Nature in Houston

children out in the woods As the holiday season ramps up and kids are out of school, be intentional as often as you can about putting down the phones and other devices and getting out in nature. Thankfully, in a city as big as Houston, there are plenty of green spaces and parks to explore.

This holiday season, grab your kids and make a plan to get outside in nature! You will be amazed at the difference it makes in your mood and mental health!

Elizabeth was raised in Houston and met her husband Ryan shortly after graduating from Texas A&M with a journalism degree. A few years later, Grayson {Sept 2010}, turned Elizabeth’s world upside down, not only with his sparkling blue eyes and killer smile, but with his profound disabilities and diagnosis of Mitochondrial Disease. After two years of navigating the world of special needs parenting, Elizabeth and Ryan were blessed with Charlotte {Jan 2013} and Nolan {Sept 2015}, perfectly completing their party of five. Elizabeth and her crew live in Katy, and when she can steal a few moments for herself, she can be found out for Mexican food and margaritas with girlfriends, binge-listening to podcasts and audiobooks, or trying once again {unsuccessfully} to organize her closet.
