Spring Break at Home: Simple Ways to Make it Fun

Spring Break is here, and if you’re anything like me, a single mom of three girls (16, 11, and 7), you might be wondering how to make it fun at home without booking a flight.

Some years we travel. Some years we don’t. And honestly? Some of our sweetest memories have happened right here at home in Houston, in pajamas, with late bedtimes and a messy kitchen.

If you’re staying in town this year, here are some simple ways to make Spring Break at home fun and memorable.

First, let go of the idea that every day of your Spring Break at home needs to be packed. I aim for one simple “highlight” each day. That’s it.

Sometimes it’s a real outing.

Sometimes it’s popsicles in the driveway.

Both count.

Be a Tourist in Your Own City

We live somewhere people actually vacation, so we take advantage of it.

A few easy wins for Spring Break at home:

The Houston Zoo (go early!)

The Houston Museum of Natural Science

A picnic at Hermann Park

An afternoon at Discovery Green

With three different ages, I’ve learned not to force everyone to love the same thing in the same way. My teen might bring a friend, My 11 year is okay as long as she has some type of squishy or slime she can carry around and My 7-year-old just wants snacks and playground time. Flexibility keeps the peace.

Create One or Two Traditions

For our Spring Break at home we try and keep it simple:

A canvas painting hour!

Everyone chooses one dinner each night or even gets to cook it themselves!

A “yes day” (within reason!)

It doesn’t have to be elaborate. It just has to feel different.

Let the Big Kids Breathe

If you have a teen, you know: Spring Break at home doesn’t automatically mean family time all week.

I’ve learned not to take it personally. We plan one or two intentional family moments, and the rest of the time? I let her sleep in, text friends, and be 16.

That balance makes the time we do spend together better.

Change the Routine

Sometimes Spring Break magic is just a shift:

Later bedtimes.

Renovate the front of the house with them!-Buy a small bag of stones and paint and let them out when dry to decorate the yard. (My oldest picks an outdoor vase for this activity.)

A special snack basket for the park- Fruits, goldfish and plenty of water.

Cake baking challenges are always fun!- Buy the all in one baking boxes and half add it!

Small changes make home feel new again.

At the end of the day, our kids won’t remember whether we traveled. They’ll remember how it felt.

If you’re relaxed, present, and laughing with them — even in the backyard — that’s the part that sticks.

And honestly? That’s more than enough.
